1919 CFL
In 1919, Canadian Football consisted of three separate leagues: the IRFU (Interprovincial Rugby Football Union), the ORFU (Ontario Rugby Football Union), and the CIRFU (Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union). Football operations resumed in 1919 for the regular season, but all playoffs and the Grey Cup Championship were cancelled as a result of lingering affects of World War I. No playoff games were held in the east because of a rules dispute with the CRU in the West, lack of interest in the East, and student studies to the Intercollegiate Union which were deemed more important. The playoffs and Grey Cup would resume in 1920. On the field, the IRFU was the most tightly contested in history up to that point, as all four teams were serparated by only two games. Montreal (4-2) would take the league championship by one game over the Toronto Argonauts (3-3) and the Hamilton Tigers (3-3). Toronto RAA would have no trouble in the ORFU with a perfect 4-0 record, while the McGill Redmen would do the same in the CIRFU with an identical 4-0 record.
