1921 APFA
In 1921, the APFA would go through many changes. The league would grow from 14 teams to 21 teams. The new teams were Brickley's New York Giants, Cincinnati Celts, Tonawanda Kardex, Washington Senators, Evansville Crimson Giants, Green Bay Packers, Minneapolis Marines, and the Louisville Brecks. The Detroit Heralds would become known as the Detroit Tigers, and would fold in mid-season. Their roster would be absorbed by the Buffalo All-Americans. The Cleveland Tigers would change their name to the Cleveland Indians, the Decatur Staleys would become known as the Chicago Staleys, and in 1922 would become known as the Chicago Bears. 1921 was the second and final year of the American Professional Football Association, as the league would officially become the National Football League in 1922. The APFA Championship would go to the Chicago Staleys, even if by the slimmest of margins. The Staleys and the Buffalo All-Americans would finish the season with identical 9-1 records, and they would split the two games they played against each other. And in 1921, there were no playoffs, so they had to resort to an obsolete tie breaking rule in order to hand the league championship to Chicago. The rule states that if two teams play multiple times in a season, the last game between the two teams carries more weight. Thus, the Chicago victory actually counted more in the standings, giving Chicago the championship.
