1928 CFL
In 1928, Canadian Football consisted of 6 separate leagues, which only competed within its own league during the regular season. Each league would have teams that would qualify for the post-season, and the right to compete for the 16th Grey Cup Championship. This included the IRFU (Interprovincial Rugby Football Union), the ORFU1 (Ontario Rugby Football Union - Group 1), the ORFU2 (Ontario Rugby Football Union - Group 2), the CIRFU (Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union), the ARFU (Alberta Rugby Football Union) and the TCL (Tri-City League). The top teams in 1928 were the Hamilton Tigers and the Regina Roughriders at 6-0-0, and the Toronto Balmy Beach Beachers at 4-0-0. Although the McGill Redmen and the Edmonton Eskimos won their leagues, both teams declined participation in the playoffs, and so the Hamilton Tigers and the Regina Roughriders would move on by forfeit. In the first round of the playoffs, it was the Toronto Orfuns over the Sarnia Imperials 6-0, and the Regina Roughriders over St. John's College 12-1. In the Semi-finals it was Hamilton over the Toronto Orfuns 28-6, while Regina would move on with a bye, setting up the match-up for the 16th Grey Cup Championship. The 16th Grey Cup was played on December 1, 1928, before 4,767 fans at the A.A.A. Grounds at Hamilton. The Hamilton Tigers shut out the Regina Roughriders 30 to 0. The field conditions were extremely muddy, and the footing was poor for both teams. The Tigers' Brian Timmis started the scoring in the first quarter with a 10-yard TD run, giving Hamilton a 6-0 lead, as the extra point was missed. The score would not change until the third quarter, as both teams played tough defense. In the third quarter, after scoring a rouge, the Tigers recovered a fumble at Regina's 30-yard line, several Tiger players dribbled and kicked the ball over the line, and Simpson fell on it for a touchdown. Leadley converted the extra point for a 13-0 lead. Later in the quarter Walker would score on a 1-yard TD run to make the score 19-0, as Leadley once again converted. Hamilton would score again on a 20-yard TD pass from Welch to Simpson, to make the score 25-0 heading into the fourth quarter. Late in the fourth quarter, the Tigers' Timmis would add one more 8-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring at 30-0.
