1977 NFL
In 1977, the Seattle Seahawks were placed in the AFC West while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were slotted in the NFC Central. This was the last NFL regular season with 14 games. The regular season was expanded to 16 games in 1978, with the preseason reduced from six games to four. It was also the final season of the eight-team playoff field in the NFL, before going to ten the following season. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continued their futility all the way up to week thirteen, when they finally won their first game. It was a 33-14 win over the New Orleans Saints. They would win again the following week against the St.Louis Cardinals 17-7, to end their season at 2-12. Division winners in the AFC were Baltimore in the East, Pittsburgh in the Central, and the up and coming Denver Broncos in the West, with the Wild-Card going to Oakland. In the NFC, it was Dallas in the East, Minnesota in the Central, and Los Angeles in the West, with the Wild-Card going to Chicago. In the first round of the AFC playoffs, the Raiders had to go to two overtimes to beat the Colts 37-31, and the Broncos took care of the mighty Steelers 34-21. In the NFC, the Vikings beat the Rams 14-7, while the Cowboys pounded the Bears 37-7. In the conference championship games, the Cowboys beat the Vikings 23-6, and the Broncos survived a furious fourth quarter comeback attempt by the defending champions Raiders, and held on to win 20-17, setting up the match-up for Super Bowl XII. The Cowboys defeated the Broncos 27–10 to win their second Super Bowl. The game was played on January 15, 1978, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Cowboys defense dominated most of Super Bowl XII, forcing eight turnovers and allowing only eight pass completions by the Broncos for just 61 yards. Two of those interceptions led to 10 first-quarter points. Denver's longest play of the game was just 21 yards, which occurred on their opening drive. Dallas expanded its lead to 20–3 in the third quarter after wide receiver Butch Johnson made a diving catch in the end zone for a 45-yard touchdown reception. Denver cut the lead down to ten, 20–10, after an ineffective Morton was replaced by Norris Weese late in the third period, but the Cowboys put the game out of reach in the fourth when fullback Robert Newhouse threw a 29-yard touchdown pass on a halfback option play to receiver Golden Richards. For the first and only time, two players won Super Bowl MVP honors: defensive tackle Randy White and defensive end Harvey Martin. This was also the first time that a defensive lineman was named Super Bowl MVP.
