1978 CFL
1978 was a very competitive season for the Canadian Football League, as only three teams had losing records. Ottawa won the Eastern Conference fairly easily by 2.5 games over second place Montreal, while Edmonton would win a very tight and contested Western Conference by a half a game over Calgary. In the first round of the Playoffs, the Montreal Alouettes would take care of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 35-20, while the Calgary Stampeders would stampede over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 38-4. In the Division Finals, the Alouettes would upset the Ottawa Rough Riders 21-16, while the Edmonton Eskimos would have little trouble with the Stampeders 26-13, setting up the match-ups for the 66th Grey Cup. The 66th Grey Cup was played on November 26, 1978 before 54,695 fans at Exhibition Stadium at Toronto. The Edmonton Eskimos won against the Montreal Alouettes with a close 20-13 victory. This was the first of the Eskimos' record five consecutive Grey Cup victories. The Eskimos would dominate most of the game early, and would jump out to a 17-3 lead in the third quarter. The Alouettes had to contend with the Eskimos fearsome defensive line, the "Alberta Crude", made up of Ron Estay, David Boone and Dave Fennell, (known as Dr. Death). Sonny Wade came off the bench for Montreal and almost led the Als to a comeback victory (and probably would have won what would have been his record 4th Grey Cup Most Valuable Player award,) but their final drive stalled at the Eskimos 27 yard line. Edmonton and Montreal have met in 11 Grey Cup clashes. The Eskimos have won in 1954, 1955, 1956, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2003 and 2005's overtime thriller. The Alouettes prevailed in 1974, the Ice Bowl of 1977, and 2002.
