1997 NFL
In 1997, the Oilers relocated from Houston, Texas to Nashville, Tennessee. The newly renamed Tennessee Oilers played their home games during this season at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee while a new stadium in Nashville began construction. Division winners in the AFC were New England in the East, Pittsburgh in the Central, and Kansas City in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to Miami, Jacksonville, and Denver. In the NFC, it was New York in the East, Green Bay in the Central, and San Francisco in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to Tampa Bay, Detroit, and Minnesota. In the AFC Wild-Card Playoffs, the Patriots took care of the Dolphins 17-3, while the Broncos rolled over the Jaguars 42-17. In the NFC, the Buccaneers beat the Lions 20-10, while the Vikings overcame a 22-13 deficit with 7:22 left in the game to win 23-22 over the Giants. In the AFC Divisional Playoffs, the Steelers would win a defensive struggle over the Patriots 7-6, while the Broncos would overcome a 10-7 deficit in the fourth quarter to win 14-10 over the Chiefs. In the NFC, the 49ers would roll over the Vikings 38-22, while the Packers would take care of the Buccaneers 21-7. In the conference championship games, the Broncos built a 24-14 halftime lead and cruised to a 24-21 win over the Steelers in the AFC, while the Packers rolled over the 49ers 23-10, setting up the match-ups for Super Bowl XXXII. The Broncos defeated the Packers by the score of 31–24. The game was played on January 25, 1998 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California, the second time that the Super Bowl was held in that city. The game was close throughout much of the contest. The Broncos converted two turnovers to take a 17–7 lead in the second quarter before the Packers cut the score to 17–14 at halftime. Green Bay kept pace with Denver in the second half, before tying the game with 13:32 remaining. Both defenses stiffened until Broncos running back Terrell Davis scored the go-ahead
touchdown with 1:45 left. Despite suffering a migraine headache that caused him to miss most of the second quarter, Davis (a San Diego native) was named Super Bowl MVP. He ran for 157 yards, caught two passes for 8 yards, and scored a Super Bowl record three rushing touchdowns. This win also broke a string of 13 consecutive wins for the NFC teams.
