2005 NFL
In 2005, division winners in the AFC were New England in the East, Cincinnati in the North, Indianapolis in the South, and Denver in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to Pittsburgh and Jacksonville. In the NFC, it was New York in the East, Chicago in the North, Tampa Bay in the South, and Seattle in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to Washington and Carolina. In the AFC Wild-Card Playoffs, it was Pittsburgh over Cincinnati 31-17, while New England would roll over Jacksonville 28-3. In the NFC, it was Carolina shutting out New York 23-0, while Tampa Bay would take care of Washington 17-10. In the AFC Divisional Playoffs, the Steelers would jump out to a 21-3 lead against the top-seeded Colts, before holding on for a 21-18 upset victory, while the Broncos would get by the Patriots 27-13. In the NFC, it was the Panthers upsetting the Bears 29-21, while the Seahawks would take care of the Redskins 20-10. In the Conference Championship Games, it was the Steelers continuing their Cinderella story by rolling over the Broncos 34-17, while the Seahawks would have no trouble with the Panthers 34-14, setting up the match-up for Super Bowl XL. The game was played on February 5, 2006, at Ford Field in Detroit. The Steelers completed their improbable run by defeating the Seahawks by the score of 21–10. Pittsburgh capitalized on two big plays that were converted into touchdowns. The Steelers jumped to a 14–3 lead early in the third quarter with running back Willie Parker's Super Bowl record 75-yard touchdown run. Seahawks defensive back Kelly Herndon's Super Bowl record 76-yard interception return set up a Seattle touchdown to cut the lead 14–10. But Pittsburgh responded with Antwaan Randle El's 43-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward, the first time a wide receiver threw a touchdown pass in a Super Bowl, to clinch the game in the fourth quarter. Ward, who caught 5 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 18 yards, was named Super Bowl MVP.
