1971 NFL
In 1971, the division winners in the AFC were Miami in the East, Cleveland in the Central, and Kansas City in the West, with the Wild-Card going to Baltimore. In the NFC, division winners were Dallas in the East, Minnesota in the Central, and San Francisco in the West, with the Wild-Card going to Washington. In the first round in the AFC, Miami and Kansas City would play one of the most memorable playoff games in history, as the teams would battle for six quarters, with Dolphins finally winning 27-24 in the second overtime, while the Colts would defeat the Browns 20-3. In the NFC, the 49ers would beat the Redskins 24-20 and the Cowboys would take care of the Vikings 20-12. In the conference championship games, the Dolphins would roll over the Colts 21-0 and the Cowboys would shut down the 49ers 14-3, setting up the match-up for Super Bowl VI. The Cowboys defeated the Dolphins by the score of 24–3. The game was played on January 16, 1972, at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, Louisiana, the second time the Super Bowl was played in that city. The Cowboys dominated Super Bowl VI, setting Super Bowl records for the most rushing yards (252), the most first downs (23), and the least points allowed (3). They remain the only team ever to prevent their opponent from scoring a touchdown in the Super Bowl. The game was close in the first half, with the Cowboys only leading 10–3 at halftime. But Dallas opened the third quarter with a 71-yard, 8-play touchdown drive, and then Dallas linebacker Chuck Howley's 41-yard interception return in the fourth quarter set up another score. Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, who completed 12 out of 19 passes for 119 yards, threw 2 touchdown passes, and rushed 5 times for 18 yards, and was named the Super Bowl's Most Valuable Player.
