The Miami Dolphins became the first, and only, NFL team to finish a championship season undefeated and untied when they beat the Washington Redskins 14-7 in Super Bowl VII. Ever since the 1972 season people have argued about what was the greatest team in NFL history. Many say that the Dolphins had a soft schedule and would not have beaten some of the other Super Bowl teams in history. However, when you consider what the Dolphins accomplished that year, you may think otherwise. They had the number one offense and the number one defense in 1972. Bob Griese, there starting quarterback broke his leg in week 5, and Miami played the rest of the regular season with their second-string quarterback Earl Morrall. Due to the rules of the time, Miami had to play the AFC Championship Game at Pittsburgh, despite having a 15-0 record. The same Pittsburgh team who would go on to win four Super Bowls between 1974-1979. The Steelers did not win their first Super Bowl until after the Dolphin Dynasty ended in 1974. The Dolphins 32-2 record between 1972-1973 remains the best overall record in any two-year period of NFL history. Miami would win the Eastern Division by a whopping 7 games. Other division winners were Pittsburgh in the Central, and Oakland in the West, with the Wild-Card going to Cleveland. In the NFC, division winners were Washington in the East, Green Bay in the Central, and San Francisco in the West, with the Wild-Card going to Dallas. In the first round of the playoffs in the AFC, Miami would beat Cleveland 20-14 and Pittsburgh would beat Oakland 13-7. In the NFC, Dallas would win a thriller at San Francisco 30-28, while Washington would beat Green Bay 16-3. In the conference finals the Dolphins would beat the Steelers 21-17, while the Redskins would take care of the Cowboys 26-3, setting up the Super Bowl VII match-up of the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Redskins. The game was played on January 14, 1973, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California, the second time the Super Bowl was played in that city. Super Bowl VII was largely dominated by the Dolphins, and remains the lowest-scoring Super Bowl to date with a total of only 21 points (3 touchdown and 3 extra points). The only drama was during the final minutes of the game, in what was later known as "Garo's Gaffe". Miami attempted to cap off their 17–0 perfect season with a 17–0 perfect score shutout with a 41-yard field goal by Garo Yepremian, but instead the game and the season was jeopardized when his kick was blocked. Instead of falling on the loose ball, the Dolphins kicker picked it up, attempted a forward pass, but batted it in the air, and Redskins' cornerback Mike Bass caught it and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown. This game also remains as the longest period in a Super Bowl for one team to be shut out, as Washington was held scoreless until 2:07 remained in the fourth quarter. Dolphins safety Jake Scott was named Most Valuable Player. He recorded two interceptions for 63 return yards, including a 55-yard return from the end zone during the 4th quarter. Scott became the second defensive player in Super Bowl history (after linebacker Chuck Howley in Super Bowl V) to earn a Super Bowl MVP.
