In 1992, division winners in the AFC were Miami in the East, Pittsburgh in the Central, and San Diego in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to Buffalo, Houston, and Kansas City. In the NFC, it was Dallas in the East, Minnesota in the Central, and San Francisco in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to Philadelphia, Washington, and New Orleans. In the AFC Wild-Card Playoffs, the Bills mounted the greatest comeback in NFL history, overcoming a 35–3 deficit against the Oilers, and winning the game in overtime 41-38. Meanwhile the Chargers didn't need any miracles as they blanked the Chiefs 17-0. In the NFC, the Eagles overcame a 20–10 Saints lead late in the third quarter by scoring 26 points in the final period to win 36-20, just one point short of the NFL postseason record set by the Chicago Bears in 1934. Meanwhile, the Redskins had no problems with the Vikings 24-7. In the AFC Divisional Playoffs, the Bills rolled over the Steelers 24-3, while the Dolphins crushed the Chargers 31-0. In the NFC, the 49ers took care of the Redskins 20-13, while the Cowboys would roll over the Eagles 34-10. In the conference championship games, the Bills had no trouble with the Dolphins 29-10 in the AFC, and in the NFC, the Cowboys would win a tight one over the 49ers in San Francisco 30-20, setting up the match-ups for Super Bowl XXVII. The Cowboys defeated the Bills by the score of 52–17, winning their third Super Bowl in team history, and their first one in fifteen years. The Bills became the first team to lose three consecutive Super Bowls, and just the second team to play in three straight (the Miami Dolphins played in Super Bowls VI-VIII, winning VII and VIII). The game was played on January 31, 1993 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Dallas forced a Super Bowl record nine turnovers—four interceptions and five lost fumbles—en route to their win over Buffalo. Thirty-five of the Cowboys' points came off of those turnovers, including three first half touchdowns. Bills backup quarterback Frank Reich, who replaced injured starter Jim Kelly in the second quarter, threw a 40-yard
touchdown on the final play of the third quarter to cut the lead to 31–17, but Dallas scored three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman was named Super Bowl MVP, completing 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns for a passer rating of 140.6, while also rushing for 28 yards.
