1994 NFL
In 1994, the Phoenix Cardinals changed their name to Arizona Cardinals in an attempt to widen their appeal to the entire state of Arizona instead of just the Phoenix area. The league honored its 75th season by having each team wear throwback uniforms during selected games. Division winners in the AFC were Miami in the East, Pittsburgh in the Central, and San Diego in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to New England, Cleveland, and Kansas City. In the NFC, it was Dallas in the East, Minnesota in the Central, and San Francisco in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to Green Bay, Detroit, and Chicago. In the AFC Wild-Card Playoffs, the Dolphins would beat the Chiefs 27-17, while the Browns would take care of the Patriots 20-13. In the NFC, the Packers would win a low scoring affair with the Lions 16-12, while the Bears would roll over the Vikings 35-18. In the AFC Divisional Playoffs, the Steelers had little trouble with the Browns 29-9, while the Dolphins blew a 21-6 halftime lead to the Chargers and lost 22-21. In the NFC, the Cowboys
hammered the Packers 35-9, while the 49ers destroyed the Bears 44-15. In the conference championship games, the Chargers won a tight one in Pittsburgh 17-13 in the AFC, while in the NFC, the 49ers and Cowboys would meet for the third consecutive year in the NFC title game, and this time the 49ers would prevail 38-28, setting up the match-ups for Super Bowl XXIX. The 49ers defeated the Chargers by the score of 49–26, becoming the first team to win five Super Bowls. The game was played on January 29, 1995 at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami, Florida. 49er quarterback Steve Young threw a Super Bowl-record six touchdown passes en route to the Super Bowl MVP award (his four touchdowns in a half tied Doug Williams from the Washington Redskins). He also completed 24 out of 36 passes for 325 yards, and was the top rusher of the game with 49 rushing yards (the first time both top passer and rusher were the same person). Two of Young's touchdown passes occurred on the 49ers' first two drives of the game. The Chargers were able to cut the deficit late in the first quarter, 14–7, on 13-play, 78-yard drive, but could not slow down San Francisco afterwards. Still, this became the first time that both teams scored in all four quarters of a Super Bowl. The combined aggregate score of 75 points and the ten total touchdowns both remain Super Bowl records.
