Division on November 12, with four games left. When San Diego reached 10–0, it had twice as many wins as any other
team in the AFL. In the Eastern Division, the Houston Oilers had started slowly, losing its first three games. But, after a tie, they rattled of 9 straight wins to win the division by one game over the Boston Patriots. George Blanda, of the Houston Oilers, was voted as the 1961 AFL Most Valuable Player by the Associated Press. Blanda passed for 3,330 yards and 36 touchdowns while leading the Oilers to the Championship over the San Diego Chargers 10-3.
