1920 CFL
While football had resumed in 1919 with the end of World War I, no Grey Cup / Dominion Championship had been played. The Grey Cup had in fact been locked in a bank vault during the war and more or less forgotten about. Once rediscovered, the cup was turned over to the Canadian Rugby Union (CRU) who would control the cup for better or worse until the 1960s. It was business as usual for the four pre-war teams of the IRFU or Big Four, and the Toronto Argonauts led by the great Harry Batstone won the title with a 5-1 record. The ORFU on the other hand was barely hanging on as they lost two of their three teams from 1919 (Ottawa Capitals and Hamilton Rowing Club). Only the return of Toronto Parkdale gave them a semblence of a league with two Toronto based teams. The Torontos (sometimes referred to as Toronto R.A.A.) were led by Lionel (Big Train) Conacher who would go on to be named the greatest Canadian athlete of the first half of the twentieth century for his exploits in football, hockey and numerous other sports. The Torontos posted a 3-1 mark to win the ORFU. In the CIRFU, McGill and Toronto Varsity tied with 3-1 records while Queen's failed to win a game. When it came to playoffs, the West was still not challenging for the Grey Cup (that would come in 1921), but Regina would win the West title. In the East, the Argonauts topped the Torontos and the University of Toronto defeated McGill to set up an all Toronto final. The Argonauts were handicapped with injuries to stars like halfback Batstone and end Frank Knight. Batstone dressed and punted for three quarters, but couldn't carry the ball leaving Dunc Munro as the main offensive weapon for the Argos. Varsity had a strong backfield led by Joe Breen and Warren Snyder and they carried the University club to a 16-3 win.. It was their fourth Grey Cup, and their first since winning the very first three Grey Cup games in 1909-11. The Varsity team scored three touchdowns (trys as they were called at the time), each then worth 5 points and converted one of them while the Argos could only manage three singles on punts.
