2009 GFL
2009 was basically a three team race in the German Football League. The Berlin Adler and the Kiel Hurricanes dominated the North Conference with identical 9-1 records, each finishing ahead of the 5-5 Dresden Monarchs. In the South Conference, it was the Schwabish Hall Unicorns (8-1-1) finishing with a comfortable lead over the second place Marburg Mercenaries (7-5). The top four teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs, and the right to compete for 31st German Bowl Championship. In the first round of the playoffs,
it was the Berlin Adler over the Weinheim Longhorns 30-13, the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns over the Assindia Cardinals 46-25, the Kiel Hurricanes over the Stuttgart Scorpions 20-6, and the Marburg Mercenaries over the Dresden Monarchs 64-63 in overtime. In the semi-
finals it was the Berlin Adler over the Marburg Mercenaries 36-21, while the Kiel Hurricanes would upset the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns 22-21, setting up the 31st German Bowl Championship. The German Bowl took place on October 3rd, 2009 between the Berlin Adler and the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes in the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt am Main, being the first finals in 13 years without involvement of the Braunschweig Lions. The game was broadcast live by the German sports television . The Berlin Adler defeated the Kiel Hurricanes 28-21.  The first points of the game came in the first quarter for the Hurricanes when Simon Sommerfeld ran for 41 yards for the touchdown. In the second quarter Berlin's kicker Benjamin Scharweit converted a 36-yard field goal to make the score 7-3.  Laeter in the second quarter, US quarterback Jon Grant threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Pascal Heck to make the score 10-7 going into halftime. In the third quarter Kiel quarterback Kyle Langston would connect with wide receiver Brandon Langston and go back into the lead 14-10. This
was followed by a Scharweit 42-yard field goal to reduce Kiel's lead to 14-13. Kyle Callahan, quarterback of the Hurricanes, threw a touchdown pass to Philipp Heider in the fourth quarter, increasing their lead to 21-13. Berlin would respond with a 3-yard touchdown run by running back David McCants, followed by a two-point conversion, pulling both teams even at 21.  McCants would add another 11-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to give the Berlin Adler a 28-21 victory, and a claim on the 2009 German Bowl Championship. The game's Valuable Player award would go to David McCants.
