2010 GFL
2010 was dominated by the top four teams in the German Football League, as there were only four teams with winning records. In the North Conference, it was the Kiel Hurricanes (11-1-0) who would finish one game better than the second place Berlin Adler (10-2-0). Meanwhile, in the South Conference, it was the Marburg Mercenaries (10-2-0) who would finish one game over the second place Schawabisch Hall Unicorns (9-3-0). In the GFL, the top four teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs, it was the Kiel Hurricanes over the Stuttgart Scorpions 23-21, the Dresden Monarchs would upset the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns 56-45, the Marburg Mercenaries would take care of the Braunschweig Lions 31-21, and the Berlin Adler would shut down the Plattling Black Hawks 17-3. In the Semi-Finals, it was the Kiel Hurrincanes blanking the Dresden Monarchs 14-0, while it was the Berlin Adler over the Marburg Mercenaries 17-6, setting up the match-up for German Bowl XXXII. German Bowl XXXII was the 32nd edition of German Football League Championship Game. It took place on October 9, 2010 between the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes and the Berlin Adler in the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt am Main. After defeats in the two previous years, the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes were finally able to prevail this time with a final score of 17-10. Kiel would score first with a 6-yard touchdown run by Simon Sommerfeld. Later in the first quarter, they would add a Dohrendorf 43-yard field goal to make the score 10-0, heading into the second quarter. After a scoreless second quarter, the Hurricanes would extend their lead to 17-0 with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Welsh to Linson. Berlin would finally get on the scoreboard with a Wiehberg 27-yard field goal to make the score 17-3. In the fourth quarter, Berlin had an opportunity to get their first touchdown, but a fumble in the end zone caused a touchback, and Kiel got the ball back at their 20-yard line with no further damage. Late in the fourth quarter, with Berlin driving for a touchdown, they would reach into their bag of tricks with a pass from running back Wise to quarterback Bruning, to tighten the score to 17-10. Berlin would attempt an on-side kick, but to no avail, and the Kiel Hurricanes would go on to win the game 17-10, and lay claim to the German Bowl XXXII Championship. Quarterback Jeff Welsh would take the honors for Most Valuable Player.
