1970 in the Canadian Football League was truly a case of the Haves & Have Nots. Seven of the nine teams won at least 6 games, while the two bottom teams won 2 and 4 games, respectively. Leading the way was the powerful Saskatchewan Roughriders who posted an impressive 14-2-0 record, far and above the rest of the league. The Edmonton Eskimos (9-7-0) and the Calgary Stampeders (9-7-0) would both finish a full 5 games behind Saskatchewan in the Western Conference. In the Eastern Conference, it was a much different story, as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-5-1), would narrowly take the Conference by only a half a game over the Toronto Argonauts (8-6-0), and one game over the Montreal Alouettes (7-6-1). The top three teams in each conference would qualify for the playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs, it was Calgary over Edmonton 16-9 in the West, while Montreal would take care of Toronto 16-7. In the Western Finals, Calgary would upset top-seeded Saskacthewan in a best-of-three 28-11, 3-11, and 15-14, while in the Eastern Finals, it was Montreal over Hamilton in a two-game sweep 33-22, and 11-4, for a point total of 43-26, setting up the match-up for the 58th Grey Cup Championship. The 58th Grey Cup was played on November 28, 1970, before 32,669 fans at CNE Stadium at Toronto. The Montreal Alouettes defeated the Calgary Stampeders 23-10. The game was marred by woeful field conditions, as throughout the contest several sections of the natural-grass surface came away in chunks. The Montreal Alouettes were a team in limbo a year prior, winning just two games. But with a new owner, new management, new coaching staff and 21 new players, the Als did what many thought to be impossible, returning the title to Montreal for the first time since 1949. Their opponents, the Calgary Stampeders, were playing in their second Grey Cup game in three years. They had not won a national championship since 1948. Much like they did all season, the Als started out of the gate slow, but got it going when it counted most.  Sonny Wades first pass attempt was intercepted by Calgarys Frank Andruski, putting the Stampeders on the Montreal 49.  After the Als defense forced Calgary to punt, the kick bounced off Bob Storeys chest and was recovered by the Stamps 15 yards from the Montreal end zone. Two plays later, Hugh McInnis punched it in to put Calgary out in front. The Alouettes responded with a major of their own on what appeared to be a broken play deep in Calgary territory. Halfback Moses Denson was trapped for a loss by Terry Wilson, but before he hit the turf he threw to Ted Alfien in the end zone. George Springate missed the convert, as Calgary preserved a one-point lead. The Als took a 9-7 advantage into the third quarter courtesy of a 21-yard field goal by Springate. But another Montreal turnover would put the Stamps in front again. A high snap on an Als punt attempt allowed Calgarys Dick Suderman to recover the ball on the Montreal 34, setting up a field goal by Larry Robinson. The Als took control of their destiny later in the quarter.  Al Phaneuf made his second interception of the game off of Jerry Keeling, returning the ball to the Calgary 27. Wade dropped back on what looked to be a pass attempt, but handed off to Tom Pullen for an easy score. It turned out to be all the Als needed, but they added one more for good measure in the final quarter. Wade hit Gary Lefebvre on a touchdown pass, sealing top player honors. The Stampders were very vocal about the poor field conditions at Torontos Exhibition Stadium, with head coach Jim Duncan calling it a “disgrace”.
