1981 NFL
In 1981, the division winners in the AFC were Miami in the East, Cincinnati in the Central, and San Diego in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to New York and Buffalo. In the NFC, it was Dallas in the East, Tampa Bay in the Central, and San Francisco in the West, with the Wild-Cards going to Philadelphia and New York. In the Wild-Card games, it was the Giants over the Eagles 27-21 in the NFC, and the Bills over the Jets 31-27 in the AFC. In the AFC Divisional Playoffs, the Bengals took care of the Bills 28-21, while the Chargers won a thriller in Miami. San Diego took a 24-0 lead in the first quarter, and after Woodley was replaced at quarterback by Don Strock, the Dolphins charged all the way back to tie and eventually go into overtime, before the Chargers would prevail 41-38. Many consider this to be one of the greatest games in NFL history. In the NFC, the Cowboys would destroy the Buccaneers 38-0, while the 49ers would take care of the Giants 38-24. In the conference championship games, the Bengals would roll over the Chargers 27-7 in the AFC, and the 49ers won a thriller against the Cowboys in San Francisco. With 4:54 left in the game, Montana led the 49ers 83 yards to the Dallas 6-yard line. Elliott rushed 4 times for 30 yards on the drive, while Solomon also made a big impact, catching two passes for 18 yards and rushing for 15 on a WR reverse. Facing 3rd down and 3 on the Cowboys 6 with 58 seconds left, Montana threw a high pass that Clark just managed to break ahead of Walls and reach in the air for the game-winning touchdown reception. This would mark the beginning of the 49er dynasty with Joe Montana. This would set up the match-ups for Super Bowl XVI. The 49ers defeated the Bengals by the score of 26–21 to win their first Super Bowl. The game was played on January 24, 1982, at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Cincinnati's 356 yards of total offense to San Francisco's 275 marked the first time in Super Bowl history that the team which was outgained in total yards won. The Bengals also committed 4 turnovers to San Francisco's 1. Three of Cincinnati's turnovers helped San Francisco build a Super Bowl record 20–0 halftime lead, off of a touchdown pass and a rushing touchdown from quarterback Joe Montana and two field goals by Ray Wersching. The Bengals began to rally in the second half with quarterback Ken Anderson's 5-yard touchdown run and 4-yard touchdown pass, but a third-quarter goal line stand by the 49ers defense and two more Wersching field goals ultimately put the game out of reach. The Bengals managed to score their final touchdown with 20 seconds left, but could not recover the ensuing onside kick. Montana was named the Super Bowl MVP, completing 14 of 22 passes for 157 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 18 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
