1926 AFL
1926 was the first of four incarnations of the American Football League. The second incarnation was from 1937-1938, the third was from 1940-1941, and the fourth was from 1960-1969. Although the four leagues shared the same name, they were completely separate and unrelated entities. As is the case with all rival Pro Football leagues, finances were a major issue. The league started with 9 teams, and by the end of the season, only four teams were left standing, as the other five teams folded. The four teams that survived the entire season were the Philadelphia Quakers, the New York Yankees, Chicago Bulls, and the Los Angeles Wildcats. On the field, the league was dominated by the Quakers and
the Yankees. The Philadelphia Quakers (8-2) would clinch the 1926 AFL championship with a 13-6 win over the New York Yankees (10-5) in week ten. At the conclusion of the regular season, the Yankees and Wildcats went on a barnstorming tour of the Southern United States. After four games against each other, the Wildcats went to California to play two home games: one against the local Hollywood Generals in Los Angeles's Wrigley Field, and the second effectively becoming the West Coast AFL-NFL Challenge Game against the Los Angeles Buccaneers in San Francisco's Ewing Field. The Yankees also went to California, played three games against the Buccaneers and one
against the Generals, and this resulted in their season extending all the way until February 1927, practically unheard of at that time. On December 14, 1926, the Philadelphia Quakers would play an exhibition game against the New York Giants of the NFL. However, it wasn't much of a game, as the Giants whitewashed the Quakers 31-0.
